Air‑conditioning: Seven tips to save money this summer

With heat waves becoming increasingly frequent, it's difficult to do without air‑conditioning. However, comfort comes at a cost: running your air conditioner continuously for several days can have a direct impact on your electricity bill. Here are seven tips to save money without breaking a sweat this summer.

1. Setting the temperature between 22–24°C

During heat waves, it's tempting to crank the air‑conditioning all the way up. However, setting the thermostat to 19°C doesn't cool your home any faster and doesn't necessarily improve comfort.

Setting the thermostat between 22°C and 24°C is sufficient and much more cost‑effective. It also prevents the air conditioner from having to work harder than necessary.

Did you know?

For every degree you turn up the thermostat, you'll turn up the savings!

2. Keeping the cool air inside and the heat outside

With the kids constantly coming and going, the running back and forth to check on the barbecue, and the cat or dog begging to be let out or come back in, you are letting in warm air and humidity. The air conditioner then has to work overtime to keep your home cool.

That's why it's important to make sure the patio door and windows are closed properly and to remind the kids not to linger in the doorway.

3. Cleaning the air conditioner filter twice during the summer

A dirty filter prevents air from circulating properly and forces the unit to work harder to cool the same amount of air.

Remember to clean the filter at the beginning and in the middle of summer. This will improve your air conditioner's efficiency and extend its lifespan.

4. Using heat‑generating appliances at the right time

The oven and dryer generate heat and warm the air that the air conditioner is trying to cool. Whenever possible, try to use them in the morning or in the evening.

If you have a clothesline, make the most of it: you'll save on electricity, and your clothes will smell like summer!

5. Combining a fan and your air conditioner

A fan distributes cool air more effectively and enhances the feeling of coolness, without using much energy. That will allow you to set the thermostat a degree or two higher and still feel comfortable.

Do you have a ceiling fan? Make sure the blades are turning counterclockwise (when viewed from below). This will push the air down and create a pleasant breeze.

6. Adjusting your air conditioner usage based on the time of day

The air conditioner doesn't need to run continuously. At night or during cooler periods, opening the windows may be enough.

Setting the air conditioner to a higher temperature or turning it off (if possible) will help you avoid wasting energy when you're not home.

Tip: Before you leave, close the blinds and curtains to keep the house as cool as possible. It will help you cool the house more quickly when you return.

7. Replacing an air conditioner that has reached the end of its useful life with a heat pump

If you're planning to replace your air conditioner or buy one, consider purchasing a heat pump. This is a cost‑effective option that uses significantly less energy and provides year‑round comfort: air‑conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter.

Air‑conditioning can be enjoyed without wasting electricity. With a few simple habits, you'll increase your comfort, save energy and lower your electricity bills. Stay cool while saving!
