Self‑generation without compensation plan

The Self‑generation without compensation plan is for customers connected to the Hydro‑Québec grid who want to operate power generation equipment of any sort (generator, wind turbine, etc.) to produce electricity for their own use.

Net metering option

The net metering option is for customers connected to the Hydro‑Québec grid who want to operate equipment to produce electricity from renewable sources for their own use.

If you want to take advantage of the net metering option, please send us the following three documents:

  • Formulaire Demande d’installation d’équipement d’autoproduction [Request to install self‑generation equipment form]
  • proof of CSA certification for the inverter
  • single-line diagram showing the generating equipment as installed

*We recommend that you submit your proposal to Hydro‑Québec before purchasing any equipment.

Once your proposal has undergone a technical review and your application has been approved, you will receive authorization to connect your facility to the Hydro‑Québec grid.

When the installation is complete, your master electrician must conduct the compliance tests and return to us the signed audit report (which we will send you in advance). Upon receiving the report, we will be able to start billing you according to the net metering option.

Important:
We suggest that you submit your project to Hydro-Québec before purchasing any equipment.

Emergency power supply

Hydro‑Québec’s Conditions of Service authorize the connection of a backup power supply when it is equipped with a switching device that includes a mechanical interlock, such as a CSA C22.2 No. 4 or UL 98 certified double‑throw safety switch, which makes it impossible to couple the backup power source with the electricity distribution system (open transition). In this case, it is not necessary to submit a connection request.

In all other situations, the master electrician or the engineer responsible for the project must submit a request to Hydro‑Québec for the connection of a backup power supply before connecting the backup source to Hydro‑Québec’s system.

For example, a connection request for a backup power supply must be submitted if:

  • the installation allows make-before-break switching (closed transition);
  • a multimode inverter is used;
  • a microgrid interconnection device (MID) is used;
  • a manual transfer switch (MTS) or an automatic transfer switch (ATS) is used.
