Summer in an apartment or condo can quickly start to feel sticky, especially on hot days. Here are five practical tips to help you stay comfortable while reducing your energy consumption.
1 - Keep the sun out and the cool in
Use your curtains and blinds strategically to reduce the heat. Close them as soon as the sun hits your windows. Blackout curtains, cellular shades or even heat-control window films can help block some of the sun’s rays to keep your space cooler, especially during the hottest hours of the day.
2 - Use cross ventilation when you can
Open windows on opposite sides of your home early in the morning or in the evening when the outside air is cooler. Place a fan near a window to draw in the fresh air. As soon as the outdoor air becomes warmer than the indoor air, close the windows.
Did you know?
Fans don’t cool the air, but they create a refreshing breeze on your skin. Turn them off when you leave the room to save energy.
3 - Minimize the use of heat-generating appliances
Use your oven, dryer or any other appliance that produces heat as little as possible during the day. Use small appliances for cooking or opt for cold meals like salads or smoothies.
Here’s a simple but effective tip: air-dry your clothes outdoors instead of turning on the dryer. It’ll help keep the heat and humidity out of your home and save energy, too.
4 - Consider installing a heat pump for year-round comfort
If you own your home and it’s an option for you, consider installing a heat pump. It provides heating in winter and air conditioning in summer. You may be eligible for financial support under Hydro‑Québec’s LogisVert Efficient Homes Program to help cover purchase and installation costs. A heat pump is a long-term solution to make your home more comfortable.
5 - Manage the humidity to better cope with the heat
High humidity makes the heat feel more intense because it stops sweat from evaporating quickly. Use a dehumidifier to keep indoor humidity at a comfortable level (ideally between 40% and 60%). This will make it easier to breathe and enhance the feeling of coolness, especially in a heatwave.
These tips will help you beat the summer heat and make your home more comfortable, even on the hottest days.
