When does a connection request for a backup power source need to be submitted?

Hydro‑Québec’s Conditions of Service [PDF 1.6 MB] authorize the connection of a backup power source when it is equipped with a switching device that has a mechanical interlock, such as a CSA C22.2 No. 4 or UL 98 certified double‑throw safety switch, which makes it impossible to couple the backup power source with the electricity distribution system (open transition). In such a case, it is not necessary to submit a connection request.

Below are the switching devices with a mechanical interlock accepted by Hydro‑Québec:

  • A CSA C22.2 No. 4 or UL 98 certified double‑throw safety switch
  • A generator distribution panel with a CSA C22.2 No. 29 certified original manufacturer interlock

For all other situations, the electrical contractor must submit the Demande de raccordement d’une alimentation de secours [connection request for a backup power source] form prior to connecting the backup power source to the Hydro‑Québec grid.
