A new agreement focuses on developing the wind potential in an area known to the Mi’gmaq as Gespe’gewa’gi, which covers the Gaspésie and the eastern Bas‑Saint‑Laurent.
About the partnership Up to 6,000 MW could be developed over the next few years.
Hydro-Québec, the Alliance de l’énergie de l’Est and the Mi’gmawei Mawiomi Business Corporation (MMBC), whose shareholders are Gespeg, Gesgapegiag and Listiguj, have formed a partnership to develop the wind potential of Gespe’gewa’gi.
Ultimately, the projects stemming from the agreement could generate up to 6,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy. The potential development represents investments of up to $18 billion, to which several billion could be added for extending the power transmission system to eastern Québec.
This historic partnership marks a new era for energy development in eastern Québec, the strategic hub for wind power in Québec.
